If you’re one of our youth training at Grant Brothers MMA Gym, there are practical sports nutrition strategies that can help you to successfully implement the basic principles of sports nutrition. As per Power Bar’s nutritionist, here are some excellent tips:

Start exercise fully hydrated

Bring a water bottle to school and take frequent sips throughout the day

Consume 14–20 ounces (400–600 ml) of water or sports drink 2–4 hours before you train or compete

Keep hydrating as needed during warm-ups by drinking another 8 oz (240 ml) of fluid, especially if conditions are hot or humid

Check your urine color before exercise to monitor your hydration status. A light-yellow color is consistent with adequate hydration. A darker color, like the color of apple juice, is typically a sign that more fluids are needed before you start training or competing

Start exercise fully fueled

When possible, consume a meal 2–4 hours before training or competing. Choose familiar high-carb foods and beverages, and include a moderate amount of lean protein as well. Avoid slow-to-digest, fatty foods during the pre-exercise meal. Take a look at the table below for examples of pre-exercise meals

Have an easy-to-digest carbohydrate snack if you’re hungry in the hour before exercise. See the table below for snack ideas

If you have an early-morning practice or competition, consume your pre-exercise meal the evening before and have a carbohydrate snack on your way out the door in the morning

If your stomach is in a knot before a competition, try a liquid carbohydrate source (e.g., fruit smoothie or a meal-replacement drink) in place of solid foods

Trial your pre-exercise meals before practices so that you know you will be comfortable with these foods on competition days

Rehydrate and refuel as needed during exercise

Plain water is generally fine for exercise lasting less than 1 hour in moderate weather conditions

Consume a sports drink instead of plain water if you’re exercising vigorously for an hour or more, or any time you’re exercising in hot or humid conditions:

The flavor, sodium, and carbohydrates in a sports drink can help to optimize fluid intake and retention during exercise

While high school sports generally don’t fully deplete carbohydrate muscle fuel reserves in a single training session or competition, the carbohydrates in a sports drink can help to sustain blood glucose levels during longer exercise sessions

Consume fluids at a rate that closely matches your sweat rate during exercise. This generally requires something on the order of 13–26 fl oz (400–800 ml) every hour of exercise, preferably in smaller amounts taken frequently, such as 3–7 fl oz (100–200 ml) every 15 minutes or so

Drink from your own sport bottle so you can track your fluid intake

To refuel, to ward off hunger, and to rehydrate between events during meets or between matches or games during tournaments, consume familiar, easy-to-digest carbohydrate snacks along with water or a sports drink. See the table below for snack ideas

Trial your rehydration and refueling strategies during practices before implementing them during competitions

Promote full recovery after exercise

After a long training session or an extended competition, consume 0.5 grams of carbohydrates per lb (1.1 grams per kg) body weight within 30 minutes of finishing exercise

Repeat this again within 2 hours or transition to high-carbohydrate snacks and meals

For a 150-lb (68-kg) athlete, this equates to about 75 grams of carbohydrates immediately after playing, and then again 2 hours later

Consume some protein as soon as possible after exercise

After a long practice, a strength-training workout, or an extended competition, consume 15–25 grams of protein as soon as possible after exercise

See the table below for ideas on what you can eat and drink after exercise to promote rapid recovery

Weigh yourself before and after exercise to gauge your net loss of fluids. To replace this fluid, gradually drink 16–24 fl oz (475–700 ml) of sports drink, recovery beverage, or water for every 1 lb of weight lost. Consume sodium sources along with your fluids for more effective rehydration

If your loss of fluids consistently exceeds 2% of your body weight, try to increase your fluid intake during subsequent training sessions or competitions to avoid dehydration

But nobody’s getting their head jammed through the floor. To Tally Bodenstein-Kales, a child psychologist watching her 8-year-old son, Noah, learn the sport, it’s all good.

“What they see on TV is certainly the ugly side of the sport, the side that doesn’t appeal to many women, for sure,” she said. “But in reality when they actually go into these classes, it’s nothing like that. It’s very gentle and very elegant.

“And I think it’s been really good for his self-esteem,” she added.

Mixed martial arts are exploding in popularity due to ferocious Ultimate Fighting Championship bouts shown on pay-per-view TV. The McGuinty government’s decision in August to allow professional MMA fights in Ontario is also fuelling their popularity.

“And wait till it happens next year that there’s an event. Just wait. That’s going to be huge. We haven’t seen anything yet,” said Joel Gerson, president of Revolution MMA, which operates clubs in North York and Thornhill.

But gentle? Elegant? Mixed martial arts?

“The kids’ MMA that we do is very controlled. There’s very little contact to the face and to the head. It’s much more focused on the art and the self-discipline and the confidence,” said Gerson, whose club offers courses for children as young as 3.

“It’s not always about making the other kid tap out and squeegeeing blood off the mat.”

Joey de Los Reyes, an owner of the Kombat Arts Training Academy in Mississauga, agrees. “We really pride ourselves in teaching kids the other aspects of martial arts, things like discipline, focus being civil to people, humility, all that kind of stuff.”

Meanwhile, most adults interested in MMA are there for the fitness aspects.

“The reason is that people see these fighters and they’re in the best shape of any athlete,” Gerson said. “The fitness systems that these MMA athletes are using will get you in the best shape the fastest.

“I can come… not get punched in the face … and get in great shape and I’m not stuck on a treadmill staring at red dots for 45 minutes watching Seinfeld.”

People who want serious MMA training need to be careful because now a lot of fitness gyms and karate schools are offering MMA-type classes, Gerson warned.

“There’s probably just a handful of clubs that have the coaching, facilities and bodies enough to get someone to a level where they can be competitive and it’s not going to be your mom-and-pop karate shop.

“And the big thing is the safety,” he said. “You just can’t get just anybody (as an instructor) in there.”

Training for MMA can also be costly. Not much equipment is needed, but the lessons are very specialized, Gerson said.

“You’re looking at between $1,000 and $2,000 for your kid for a year typically.”

It’s worth it for Bodenstein-Kales. Her son gets exercise and help with listening through MMA classes.

“It helps him with his memory as well because he has to remember these certain moves that he’s doing. So it’s been great on many fronts,” she said.

The course, teaches the three T’s: Talk your way out. Tell an adult. And, as the last resort, and only when attacked, Tackle the bully. Then, if the person attacks you physically, grab him in a bear hug and take him down to pin and safely hold until rescue comes. The aim is to provide self-confidence and the physical skills for self-defense. Different age groups are taught different techniques.

The techniques are all non-violent control tactics designed to minimize injury to the bully if used during a real fight. But schools can only do so much. Rener Gracie believes “bullyproofing” starts at home. Building on his experience in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, his family business, Rener co-created Gracie Bullyproof, a youth confidence and character development program. Here, he shares what you can do to ensure that your child never becomes a victim of this pervasive problem.

When I met 7-year-old Mathew, he seemed like any other child on his first day at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy—a little nervous and shy. His mother, Maria, sat on the couch in the lobby filling out the new student registration form, and he sat beside her, quietly, staring at the floor. I introduced myself and then reached out to Mathew.

“Hey champ, my name is Rener. What’s your name?”

He sat motionless.

I pressed, “How old are you, buddy?”

He continued to stare blankly for several seconds before mumbling, “I wish I was on flight 800.”

It took a moment before I realized that he was referring to the airliner that exploded over the Atlantic Ocean killing all passengers. I will never forget the feeling of utter and total emptiness that swept over me when Mathew shared his dark outlook with me. I pulled his mother aside and asked what could cause a child of such a young age to feel this way. She explained that an older boy had been bullying Mathew at school for several weeks. The bully was always well behaved in the presence of teachers, but as soon as they disappeared, he would drag Mathew by the ankles around the bathroom floor. Mathew never spoke of this harassment, but eventually refused to go to school for fear of the bully.

Upon learning of Mathew’s plight, Maria notified the school principal. The principal spoke to the bully and his parents and arranged for Mathew to meet with the school counselor. The counselor quickly discerned the depth of Mathew’s anguish and recommended that he see a psychologist. The psychologist tried to help Mathew understand that the bullying wasn’t his fault and that he should confront the other boy to get him to stop. But, without self-confidence, there was no way Mathew could muster the courage to act on this sound advice. His world was crashing down inside of him, and he desperately needed help. On the advice of a friend, Maria brought her son to the Gracie Academy in a last-ditch effort to restore Mathew’s confidence and help him regain control of his life.
